B. Vithal
B. Vithal (1935-1992) was a distinguished Indian sculptor and painter, known for his powerful and expressive works that often drew from Indian mythology and rural life. Born in Maharashtra, Vithal studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, where he developed his unique style characterised by robust forms and dynamic compositions. As a sculptor, Vithal excelled in creating large-scale bronze and metal works that conveyed a sense of movement and vitality. His paintings, on the other hand, were noted for their bold lines and vibrant colors, often depicting human figures and animals in a stylised manner. Vithal’s art was deeply rooted in Indian traditions, yet it carried a contemporary resonance that made it widely accessible. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi Award.
