Kailash Chandra Meher, born on January 22, 1954, in Sonepur, Odisha, is an acclaimed Indian artist renowned for his exquisite modern art and traditional Tussar Pattachitra paintings. Meher first learned the art of painting from his father before furthering his studies at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, where he earned a diploma in Fine Arts.
Meher began his career in 1978 at the Weavers Service Centre in Bhubaneswar, where he designed textiles. Throughout his career, he has consistently experimented with new ideas and techniques, making his artwork appealing to audiences both in India and internationally. His innovative designs have significantly contributed to the enhancement of many artisans’ work, enabling them to improve their skills and earn a livelihood. Many of his students and followers have received National Awards under his mentorship.
In recognition of his substantial contributions to art, the Government of India awarded Meher the Padma Shri in 2013. His exceptional tree paintings were notably highlighted for the prestigious Shilp Guru award. Meher’s work continues to inspire and support many artisan families, cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure in the world of Indian art.
